AI startup Genspark raises $100 million to compete with Google, source says

Search startup Genspark has raised $100 million in a series A funding round, valuing the startup at $530 million, according to a source familiar with the matter, as the race to use artificial intelligence to disrupt Google’s (GOOGL.O), opens new tab stranglehold on the search engine market heats up. The Palo Alto-based company currently has over 2 million monthly active users, and the round was led by a group of U.S. and Singapore-based investors, the source said.

The company raised a $60 million seed round last June. Its CEO Eric Jing led Baidu's (9888.HK), opens new tab AI-powered smartphone and smart speaker Xiaodu unit.

Genspark is one of a number of startups attempting to uproot the search engine market dominated by Alphabet’s Google. AI-generated search results can offer a single answer with citations, a potential user experience improvement compared to Google’s link lists.

Fifty shades of German coalitions – decoded

As single-party governments are a rarity in the country’s parliamentary system, election night does not give voters the full picture, aside from which party came first and who is likely to be the next chancellor.
The big question is which parties will team up to form a coalition government in the following weeks. The outcome of those post-election negotiations may fundamentally alter the policies of Germany’s future government.
The increasing fragmentation of the vote has made coalition-building ever more complex, leading to ever-larger party alliances over the years. Germans have come up with catchy names to keep track of the shifting combinations – most of them inspired by the parties' colours.

For example, coalitions of the Social Democrats (SPD, red), the Free Democrats (FDP, yellow), and the Greens have been known as 'Traffic-light' coalitions since the 1980s. In 2021, the incumbent Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, established the first national rendition of such a coalition – only for it to break down last November, triggering early elections. Similarly, a journalist reportedly invented the name ‘Jamaica Coalition’ in the 1990s to describe an alliance between the Christian Democrats, the FDP, and the Greens. The colour combo matched the island nation’s flag.

Pharmacies require stricter weight-loss jab checks

Online pharmacies will now have to employ stricter checks to stop people who are already a healthy weight or have a history of eating disorders buying weight-loss jabs.

They will no longer be able to dispense the medication, sold under brand names such as Wegovy and Mounjaro, to patients who have just completed online questionnaires or sent photos. In-person or video consultations will be required, to verify patient body mass index (BMI), along with information from GP or medical records.

The GPhC is worried about about both unsafe prescribing and potential supply issues, with some online pharmacies reportedly setting targets to process a certain number of prescriptions per hour. And prescribers will be told to "actively" share with a patient's GP information about what they are dispensing.

The Thai driver, born in Britain, is one of many who have enjoyed success at an elite level. The Williams driver revealed what makes Britain such a good breeding ground for talent in an interview with Formule1.nl.

"It’s quite special, yes,” Albon said when asked about the British stronghold in Formula 1. In 2025, British drivers—including British-born Alex Albon—will make up a quarter of the Formula 1 grid in 2025, with Oliver Bearman, George Russell, Lewis Hamilton, and Lando Norris all on the roster.
Formula 1 has always been influenced strongly by Britain. After all, almost all the teams are based in the UK in one way or another. Many personnel in Formula 1 are British, but the quantity of competition stands out to Albon as a clear reason why British motorsport is so healthy.
